In flight, the first thing you notice are white wing patches. Heavy build is obvious. Powerful in stormy weather and rarely troubled by rough conditions.

Large, heavy bird, broad wings, shortish tail and powerful bill. Aggressive birds on breeding grounds, dive bombing intruders.

On the ground, brutish look is reinforced. Very powerful-looking bill. Plumage almost entirely chocolate-brown, with darker streaks. Some adults can be paler, with a pale-naped look. Youngsters can look very dark above and warm-brown below. Many birdwatchers know them as Bonxies - their Shetland name.
